Mistakes I Made with the September ArtSnacks Box

The September Artsnacks box included another version of the ink and watercolor combination.  I was pleased.  Black white and any color is a winner.

I expected to learn from the mistakes I made in August, and beat the timelines of the previous months.  What actually happened was, the box got held up in the package room again, I opened it faster and got started faster, but the unfinished drawing dragged around until the end of the month. In a mad dash to beat the timing of last month’s post I finished the drawing 3 days sooner! But then didn’t want to take the picture because I lost the candy and the sticker.

How a Piece of Candy and a Sticker Caused Me to Clean My Apartment Thoroughly

For two days I searched high and low for them with no success. I cleaned and reorganized everything looking for this piece of candy, that I am sure I did not eat, and a sticker that I would not have thrown away on purpose.  At the eleventh hour I decided that I must have thrown them both away accidentally and decided to draw a sticker instead.  I put a prune in the picture as a stand in for the snack.

This drawing is another example of drawing on top of the paint.  I put down a sketch of the paint tube first, then a wash of the prussian blue.  After the wash dried, I painted on the leaf pattern, then drew in the details with ink on top.

Mistakes I Made with the September ArtSnacks Box:

  1. I lost track of the candy and the sticker and caused myself undue stress looking all over for it.
  2. Looking for the sticker and snack too long before coming up with a plan B.
  3. I waited too long to take the image of the final drawing.
  4. There was no plan for instances where I am unable to get to the package room before 6pm.
  5. I spattered the drawing with a wash of the Prussian blue, but also my shoes and stepping stool.

Things I Did Right with the September ArtSnacks Box:

  1. Used tape to protect the margins of the drawing for the first wash.
  2. Created some practice swatches of the paint and ink before I started drawing.
  3. Finished the challenge drawing 3 days sooner than I did in August.
  4. Used the challenge as an opportunity to practice drawing on top of the paint.

The New Art Supplies Inside the September ArtSnacks Box

This month I was very pleased with the contents of the box.  Now I have a new opinion of Prussian blue which I have always thought of as “blue-black”.  In addition to blue-black, it turned out to also be a dark turquoise.  The box also included some new pens, which I liked better than I thought I would, and a new brush.  The jumbo water soluble colored pencil was a disappointment compared to Derwent Inktense pencils, but as water soluble colored pencils go, it was satisfactory.  It could be that the hue was too muted to make a fair assessment.
