5 Ways to Fix Drawing Mistakes
No matter how much you hate the page, there are many ways to make revisions.Β The key is to keep going back to the pages you don’t like, and add and subtract until you do like them.Β You could:
- blot out the part you don’t like with black
- collage over it
- cover it with gesso
- improvise with dark values of another color to cover the offending part
- use gouache or other opaque paint
Sketchbook Drawings Naturally Spark Up New Inspiration
When there are pages that I don’t particularly like, I could keep massaging it until I do like it.Β Or I could completely blot it out and start over.Β This idea is a safety net for any drawing.Β Fix drawing mistakes and help your sketchbook to be a place that inspires you.Β
An Easier Method is to Leave the Mistake There
Some advise against going back to a drawing to make corrections, and I can see the logic in this idea.Β If you do keep altering it until you like it, you will have obliterated your thinking process to get the next steps.Β It helps to look at your previous work to appreciate your journey and progress.Β Β
Perfectionism can be a real hindrance to creativity. By leaving mistakes in your sketchbook, you can reduce the pressure to create a perfect piece of art. Embracing mistakes as a part of the creative process can allow you to relax and enjoy the process of creating, rather than being focused solely on the end result.
Use your sketchbook as a playground and not a portfolio.Β Share only the drawings you’re proud of on social media.Β If you post on Instagram, use #sketchbookplayground to share your work with us.

This is my drink – with lime juice and lots of ice. I am loving this drawing…blue is my favorite color. I am also loving the fact that whenever there is a new post to your blog, I get an email!

As I was scrolling down my facebook page, I said to myself, “I know I get a lot of pop-ups but I never remembered seeing an ad for liquor before.” I continued my scroll then came upon your name. As I searched for your artistic creation, I was pleasantly surprise to see that your scanner malfunction was my Gin advertisement. I noticed too that the seal had been broken so I’ll have mine with OJ and a little grenadine. Just love your work!!!!
