Ideas to invite inspirationBottles are a favorite to draw.  Anything with a reflection might fascinate me.  This is an ink and watercolor sketchbook drawing inspired by Danny Gregory’s book Creative License.

Vintage Drawing Inspired by Danny Gregory

His book is encouragement to just draw anything that is in front of you.  I used to wait around for inspiration, but he helped me see how it is all around everywhere.

Ideas to invite inspiration

This in turn causes drawing to happen more, which is also a source of inspiration.  It’s a cycle.  The more you draw, the more you are inspired to draw again.

5 More Ways to Invite a Boost in Inspiration

  • Invite inspiration by paying attention to the colors and the circumstances that stimulate your inner artist and then purposely add these to your space.
  • Create stages in your workflow.  Use a certain block of time to create backgrounds in your sketchbook.
  • If you keep your expectations low and something special happens, it is a surprise that will encourage you to draw more.  Find exercises that you enjoy that force you to draw with no expectations on outcome, just a focus on becoming better.
  • Have creative people in your inner circle.  I don’t have enough.  My hope is this blog is just the vehicle I need to reach out to other artists with extraordinary talent.
  • Looking at wonderful artwork that other people have created can also give a boost.  Pinterest is a fantastic way to expose yourself to new art that speaks to you.  To see a collection of art by artists with unusual style and outstanding drawing talent, check out this Drawing and Sketching Inspiration board.

Conclusion:

Acknowledge that we are all in a state of learning and becoming better; accept that most drawings will be first drafts.  Then repeat yourself!  If you notice there is a subject you are drawn to, go with that.

About These Drawings:

The artwork in this post was made with a Pilot V-ball extra fine pen, water soluble crayons, colored pencil and God given gifts of seeing things that others don’t.

  • A gift of an intense love of colors, combinations of colors, and patterns.
  • A gift of hypersensitivity to sounds, textures and light levels.
  • A gift of seeing clearly slight differences in color and tone and also feeling vibrations and tones in others.
