Rebecca Payne. Colored pencil painting.

This post includes a colored pencil secret.  Drawing with colored pencils is a challenge, but also a joy.   Using colored pencil involves layering and blending colors to create the desired effect.

Here are some helpful tips for using them:

  1. Choose your materials.  You will need colored pencils, paper and a sharpener.  Practice will help you discover which supplies you prefer.
  2. Select your colors: Choose a color palette that you would like to work with. Choose multiple colors to create complex .
  3. Start with a light touch: When you first begin drawing, apply the color lightly. You can always add more later if needed.
  4. Layer your colors: Colored pencils are translucent, so layering colors will create a more vibrant and dynamic result. Start with the lightest colors and gradually build up to the darker colors.
  5. Blend your colors: To blend colors, you can use a blending tool such as a blending pencil, your finger, or a blending brush.
  6. Vary pressure: The amount of pressure you apply to the colored pencil will affect the final result. Use a light touch for soft, delicate shading, and a heavier touch for bold, dark lines.
  7. Experiment: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques, such as using a watercolor wash underpainting, sgraffito, layering, stippling, or burnishing.  Practice expressing different textures.
  8. Add details last: Finally, add any details you would like to your drawing, such as highlights, shadows, or texture.

The Colored Pencil Secret:

The colored pencil secret is that the pencils are fragile.  The leads can break on the inside of the pencil.  If you drop it on a hard floor, it’s probably ruined.  Once I purchased a box set of Prismacolor colored pencils and almost all of them were broken on the inside.  Treat them gently and with care.

Remember to be patient and take your time. Colored pencil drawings can be time-consuming, but the results can be beautiful and long-lasting.
