Collage and ink work well together.Β Adding collage elements to your ink drawings will make your artwork stand out. This post explains how to mix different materials, and textures to help tell a story.
Techniques to Try:
- Use found materials (ephemera) like magazine clippings, ticket stubs, or postcards to add texture and color to your sketches. These items could also be things like scraps of paper, fruit stickers, string, and leaves or flowers.Β Just glue the materials onto the paper and then sketch over them or around them.
- Experiment with layering. Start with a sketch, then add another layer of ink or watercolor, and finally add collage elements on top. Or start with a wash of color for a background and glue the pieces you want to collage first, then let it dry and draw on top.
- Use clear collage mediums over your sketch. A clear medium like a fixative spray or a glossy gel medium will work well. This will make the collage elements blend seamlessly with the drawing.
Try these in your next ink sketch and see how collage enhances your artwork. Remember always, there is no right or wrong way to create a work of art, so make sure to enjoy yourself!

These ink drawings are also overlayed with a collage of digital stickers from my phone.Β See how analogue meets digital.Β I use these digital stickers as an anti-theft device.Β The original drawing is protected like a watermark, but better.
Supplies Used to Make These Drawings:
The artwork in this post was made with ink, markers, glue, and God given gifts of seeing things that others donβt.
- A gift of an intense love of colors, combinations of colors, and patterns.
- A gift of hypersensitivity to sounds, textures, and light levels.
- A gift of seeing clearly slight differences in color and tone and also feeling vibrations and tones in others.
